5 Reasons Why Now is the Best Time to Work at Walmart

Note: As of June 2020, Walmart Online Grocery has been rolled into one Walmart app and renamed Pickup & delivery.

I’ve seen my fair share of disruption in retail. In my 10+ years as an advertising and marketing leader at Walmart, I’ve witnessed an accelerated shift in consumer culture and watched Walmart evolve its retail operations to meet these changes. There has arguably never been a more exciting time to join this company both from an internal and market perspective.

Last year, the London research firm Kantar named Walmart Retailer of the Year (you’ll need to login to read it but it’s real, I promise). The report cited our perpetually evolving omni-channel strategy and our focus on innovations from investments in self-driving vehicles to automated fulfillment centers. In 2020 and beyond, we will continue to focus on creating seamless shopping experiences for Walmart customers and establishing new areas of focus including our advertising business, the Walmart Media Group.

We accomplished a lot in 2019. A year of many "firsts." Here are some of the ones we’re really excited about:

1. In-Home Grocery Delivery: Our new service offers Walmart customers in Kansas City, MO, Pittsburgh, PA, and Vero Beach, FL, the convenience of having a trained Walmart associate stock their refrigerators with fresh groceries purchased through Walmart Online Grocery. The service was rolled out late last year, with more cities coming soon.

2. Walmart Media Group transformation: This is Walmart’s advertising business. It’s the piece of the business I helped bring to market. It was a pretty transformational year for us: We made major strides in services and technologies, hired 300+ people and launched our first major annual client event, 52Sixty. We also launched the Walmart Advertising Partners program, which allows brands to automate their Walmart Sponsored Product campaigns through API platforms including Kenshoo, Teikametrics, Flywheel Digital and Pacvue.

3. Self-driving grocery delivery vehicles: Walmart has partnered with robotics startup Nuro to test autonomous grocery delivery in Houston, TX. The goal of this program is to learn how autonomous delivery might help Walmart customers save time and live better, and whether the vehicles can be used to transport goods internally. The test is slated for 2020, and I can’t wait to see the results!

4. Walmart app Store Maps: This is a favorite feature among customers who use the Walmart app. When you walk into a Walmart store, your Walmart app shifts to "store mode" and becomes your personal navigator. Just type in the product you’re looking for and the app will guide you to it. Seriously, if you haven’t tried this, it’s incredible. Walmart updated the feature in time for Black Friday last year such that shoppers can look up a product and find the isle where it is located - one reason why Walmart was the most downloaded app on Black Friday in 2019.

5. Buy online, pick up in-store: In 2019 we expanded our In-store Pickup service to 3,100+ Walmart locations. In-store Pickup lets customers buy groceries or other products on Walmart’s site or app and pick up their order the same day at their nearest Walmart store. Walmart’s first-ever Superbowl ad cleverly illustrates the value-add to our customers.

All of this is to say that you too can be part of the #WalmartMomentum. We’re hiring across different parts of the business. Take a look at some of the great opportunities HERE.
